In a bid to safeguard the safety of minors online, a Senate panel in the United States has issued subpoenas to the CEOs of Discord, Snap and Elon Musk’s X. They will be expected to testify at a hearing after “repeated refusals” by the companies to cooperate with its investigation into the matter.

Why were subpoenas issued?

The companies have been refusing to cooperate and 'repeated refusals to appear' during weeks of negotiations. Observing the absence of the companies, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, the top Republican on the panel issued subpoenas to the tech giants on Monday.

While announcing the decision, Senator Dick Durbin on social media platform 'X' said "We promised Big Tech that they’d have their chance to explain their failures to protect kids."

What the companies have said?
Now that the companies are to testify about the safety of children online, many of the giants have issued statements regarding this.

“Snap’s CEO has already agreed to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee, and our team is coordinating with committee staff on potential dates,” Snap said in a statement.

While the companies have issued statements about their willingness to protect children online, none of them have confirmed their presence for the hearing.

"Keeping our users safe, especially young people, is central to everything we do at Discord. We have been actively engaging with the committee on how we can best contribute to this important industry discussion." said the statement of Discord.

But, Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, and TikTok did not comment, reported Reuters.

'X' which was acquired by Elon Musk last year has also issued a statement.

Wifredo Fernandez, head of US & Canada Government Affairs for X, said in a statement the company has been "working in good faith to participate in the Judiciary committee’s hearing on child protection online as safety is our top priority at X. Today we are communicating our updated availability to participate in a hearing on this important issue."

Durbin and Graham said the committee remains in discussions with both Meta and TikTok and expects their CEOs, Mark Zuckerberg and Shou Zi Chew, to testify voluntarily, reported AP.
