Chicago firing: The windshield of a Chicago police vehicle is smashed as people protesting the actions of federal immigration agents.
Chicago police responded to reports of gunfire directed at federal agents on Saturday amid ongoing immigration enforcement operations that have sparked protests across the city and drawn residents to protest in the streets.

“There were no reports of anyone being hit by gunfire,” according to ABC News, citing the Chicago Police Department. The incident occurred in response to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which said on social media platform X that a man driving a black Jeep fired at agents before fleeing the scene.

DHS confirmed that neither the suspect nor the vehicle has been located. “The shooter and vehicle remain at large, and this is a dynamic situation.” it said.

In its statement, DHS said agents were conducting operations near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue in the city’s Little Village neighborhood when the shooting took place. “During the incident, DHS says an unknown male, who was driving a black Jeep, fired shots at agents and fled the scene. DHS also said, “An unknown number of agitators also threw a paint can and bricks at Border Patrol’s vehicles,” the agency stated.

Tensions have been running high in Chicago as federal immigration enforcement intensifies under Operation Midway Blitz, a campaign launched about two months ago. The operation has triggered public outrage and frequent demonstrations, with residents at times following and confronting heavily armed agents.

Earlier this week, a federal judge issued an extensive injunction limiting agents’ use of force after ruling that a top Border Patrol official had repeatedly misrepresented threats allegedly posed by protesters, The Associated Press reported.
