Chicago Bears eyeing David Blough as passing game coordinator

NFL Team Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is attempting to fill the passing game coordinator spot and the news has emerged that they are eyeing David Blough. Blough is currently serving as an assistant quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders. Assembling the prestigious NFL team, Johnson has already hired his coordinators and brought in former Pittsurburgh Steeler’s player, Antwaan Randle El—who grew up in the Chicago area—to be the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach, as reported in Bleacher Nation. According to NFL Media’s Mark Garafolo’s post on X (formerly Twitter), David Blough is also being interviewed by two other teams: the New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars, both of the teams looking to hire him.

At 29, Blough came to Washington to join the coaching staff for the 2024 season, following his former head coach in Arizona, Kliff Kingsbury, who took over as the Commanders' offensive coordinator. Blough played under Kingsbury with the Cardinals in 2022, and in that season, Blough started two games at quarterback for Arizona after Kyler Murray got hurt. In the two games, Blough passed 58 times but managed to complete only 38, and gained a mediocre 402 yards. He ended with two touchdown passes that nearly balanced his two picks.

In 2019, Blough emerged not only as a freshman quarterback but also as Purdue's all-time leader in many important passing statistical categories. He has spent his season working with Kingsbury, who helped the rookie signal-caller Jayden Daniels to an excellent first season. His performance now has sent the interest level up of several franchises in the NFL.

Ben Johnson's selection of 28-year-old Declan Doyle as his offensive coordinator last week drew some attention. But Johnson, who will be the primary play-caller for Chicago and responsible for the overall design of its offense, seems to be constructing a staff of smart film thinkers who can do much of the heavy lifting when it comes to game planning.

Blough could prove to be a valuable addition to Chicago, and by playing a key role in development of quarterback Caleb Williams, who Chicago drafted. Additionally, Blough’s experience working alongside Kingsbury and Jayden Daniels in Washington last season would be of great value to the team. Even if Blough does not become the passing game coordinator, it'll be worthwhile talking to him as his knowledge of how Kingsbury set up his offense for Jayden Daniels in 2024 will be worthwhile.
