Chelsea storm to 5–1 victory at London Stadium; Estêvão sparks attack with assist as West Ham struggle under Potter’s pressure
Chelsea stormed to a commanding 5–1 victory over West Ham United on Friday evening(August 22), delivering a performance that underlined their attacking depth while leaving the Hammers’ manager Graham Potter under intense scrutiny. This win puts them in first position in the league standings.

The derby at the London Stadium began with a shock for the visitors when Lucas Paquetá fired West Ham ahead after just six minutes with a strike from outside the box. But Chelsea responded with ruthless efficiency. Joao Pedro’s header leveled the match, and minutes later, Pedro Neto volleyed them into the lead.

By halftime, Enzo Fernández extended the advantage, finishing off a dazzling run by 18-year-old substitute Estêvão, who had earlier been at fault for West Ham’s opener.

The second half brought little respite for West Ham. Goalkeeper Mads Hermansen misjudged a corner, allowing Moisés Caicedo to score Chelsea’s fourth, before Trevoh Chalobah added a fifth from close range. The result equaled Chelsea’s joint-biggest away victory over West Ham in the Premier League era.

Chelsea adapt without Palmer

The victory was particularly notable given the absence of Cole Palmer, who was withdrawn minutes before kickoff with a minor injury. His replacement, teenage winger Estêvão, seized the spotlight with an energetic display that included an assist and constant pressure on West Ham’s back line.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca praised his team’s response to a disappointing opening-day draw, while highlighting the impact of younger players.

Potter under fire

For West Ham, the defeat leaves serious questions. Potter has now lost 11 of his 21 matches in charge, and discontent was clear among home supporters, many of whom left early as boos echoed around the stadium. Cameras caught co-owner David Sullivan visibly frustrated in the stands.

With a League Cup tie against Wolves next week and Premier League clashes looming against Nottingham Forest, Tottenham, Crystal Palace, and Arsenal, pressure is intensifying on Potter to stabilize results.

Friday’s match highlighted two contrasting narratives: a Chelsea side building toward fluency under Maresca, and a West Ham team battling early-season crisis both on the pitch and in the dugout.
