Charlie Kirk Assassination: How conservative activist’s Turning Point Action group aided Trump's return to the White House

Charlie Kirk, conservative political activist and an ally of President Donald Trump, was shot and killed on Wednesday (September 10, 2025) during one of his trademark public appearances at a college in Utah.

Kirk, the co-founder of Turning Point USA, was speaking at a debate hosted by his non-profit political organization. Immediately before the shooting, Kirk was taking questions from an audience member about mass shootings and gun violence, according to news agency AP.

The death was announced on social media by Trump, who praised the 31-year-old Kirk, the co-founder and CEO of the youth organization Turning Point USA, as “Great, and even Legendary.” Kirk had played an influential role in rallying young Republican voters. Turning Point Action, the conservative youth organization founded by Charlie Kirk, helped encourage younger voters to turn out for Trump during the 2024 campaign.

Kirk’s Turning Point channelled millions of dollars into a get-out-the-vote program in Arizona, according to CNN.

Kirk’s organization helped Trump garner votes from more than 125,000 irregular voters it had targeted in that state, a person with knowledge of the group’s operation told CNN in 2024. Trump bagged Arizona by roughly 187,000 votes.

The staffers of Turning Point strengthened relationships with specific voters over the course of the campaign in 2024 US presidential polls as part of its “Chase the Vote” initiative, to help ensure they would vote in the election.

The efforts comprised encouraging early voting, driving voters to the polls and assisting them with mailing in ballots. According to CNN, all this was done to ensure that infrequent voters who were inclined to support Trump actually followed through with casting a ballot.

Kirk’s organization was allowed to help run on-the-ground organizing effort for Trump because federal regulators issued a decision in 2024 opening doors for candidates’ campaigns to coordinate with outside political groups on paid canvassing efforts.
