Charles Sobhraj, a serial killer known as The Serpent, has been freed from jail in Nepal. The French killer was convicted of murdering several tourists in the 1970s in Asia and was in a Nepal prison before being released recently.

Charles Sobhraj, 78, dubbed The Serpent or the Bikini Killer, has been freed from the Nepalese jail owing to his good behavior and age.
Sobhraj was convicted of killing over 20 tourists in the 1970s in Asia.
He spent 19 years in jail because he killed two North Americans back in 1975.
TV drama 'The Serpent' covered his story and showed how he preyed on young backpackers from the West. He was serving two concurrent sentences of 20 years each in Kathmandu for killing Laurent Carriere and Connie Jo Bronzich in 1975.
He was convicted in two separate trials - most recently in 2014 when he was sentenced to a high-security prison for murdering Carriere.

However, the Supreme Court in Nepal has ordered his release for health reasons. The Nepalese laws allow inmates to be released if they have shown good character and served 3/4th of their sentence.
The verdict by the Nepal Court said it was against the prisoner's human rights to keep him in prison. He regularly had heart issues and had surgery in 2017. He is supposedly involved in over 20 deaths from 1972 to 1982. The victims were burned, beaten, strangled, or drugged. He is also called the Bikini Killer.
