The helicopter encountered thick fog in the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles. Pilot Ara Zobayan climbed sharply and had nearly broken through the clouds when the Sikorsky S-76 helicopter banked abruptly and plunged into the Calabasas hills below, killing all nine aboard instantly before flames engulfed the wreckage.

The others killed were Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife, Keri, and their daughter Alyssa; Christina Mauser, who helped Bryant coach his daughter's basketball team; and Sarah Chester and her daughter Payton. Alyssa and Payton were Gianna's teammates. The National Transportation Safety Board released a report in February that blamed pilot error for the crash. The NTSB said a series of poor decisions led Zobayan to fly blindly into a wall of clouds where he became so disoriented he thought he was climbing when the craft was plunging.

In her testimony, Vanessa stated that she felt vulnerable when LASD members and emergency personnel shared the graphic photos of the crash. She feared the photos might pop up on social media and distress her. She said she didn’t react because her daughters were in the room. As such, she ran out of her house and broke down. She said she wanted to run down the street and scream out.

Vanessa has filed a lawsuit for mental anguish and emotional distress over the leaked photos. She filed the lawsuit against Chris Chester, who also lost his wife and daughter in the crash. Together, they are claiming that photos of the victims were shared across 28 devices among the LASD members and first responders.

Chris stated that the National Transportation Safety Board and the coroner had assured him of the security of the available photos. However, the fact that the LASD officers took personal photos and shared them was unbelievable.
