There has been an increased incidence of meningococcal disease in Florida's gay and bisexual men. This has made the Florida Department of Health and the US Centre for Disease Control take action and investigate the disease.

On 23rd June 2022, CDC stated that there were seven deaths and 26 cases of meningococcal disease during the investigation. Among these instances, six deaths and 24 infections were seen in men who have had sex with other men. It also added that the disease outbreak is mainly in gays, bisexuals, and other males who have engaged in sexual activities with other males. Furthermore, the disease is also common among those who have HIV.

As per the latest data, about half of the incidence of the meningococcal disease is found among Hispanic men living in Florida or those who have travelled to the State.

The meningococcal disease involves meningitis and infections in the bloodstream. While meningitis infects the spinal cord and brain lining, bloodstream infection can affect the whole body. As such, the disease can affect anyone and prove fatal.

The disease spreads when respiratory or throat secretions, like the spit or saliva, are shared. The bacteria spreads with proximal and lengthy contact between people, like when kissing or being near a coughing individual.

Symptoms of meningococcal disease are headache, fever, stiff neck, vomiting or nausea, or a purple rash. As per CDC, the first symptoms appear to be like flu. However, with time they get severe. So, if you have any of these symptoms, you should consult a medical expert immediately.

CDC is urging possible victims to get the meningococcal vaccine to observe safety. For travellers, a consultation with their medical practitioners is recommended. For those who have HIV, routine vaccinations are a must. The vaccine is available at the local pharmacy, doctor's offices, local health departments, and health centres. The insurance coverage would cover the cost of such a vaccine. Moreover, people in Florida can even opt for the no-cost vaccine at the county health department.

The outbreak of meningococcal disease comes on the heels of the monkeypox virus, causing great concern in several countries, including the USA. According to the CDC reports, there are 142 reported orthopox virus cases in the US, including 13 in Florida. CDC also stated that though the threat to the general population is not very high, the risk increases if you have been in close contact with someone suffering from monkeypox.
