Carlo Ancelotti, the revered Italian football manager, set a new record of maximum wins in the European Cup competition which is also known as the Champions League, and surpassed the record which was previously held by the legendary Scottish football manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ancelotti’s current club, Spanish football giants Real Madrid won 3-0 against Champions League counterparts SC Braga in yesterday’s match. With this win, Ancelotti has won a record 116 matches in the competition with numerous teams like AC Milan, PSG and Chelsea to name a few.

Ancelotti, 64, is believed to be one of the greatest managers in the game. Here are 3 iconic sporting moments from the illustrious career of the Italian manager.


Serie A Coach of the Year (2001)

Ancelotti won the first individual award when he transferred to Italian footballing heritage club AC Milan during the initial stages of his career. Before joining Milan he was in charge of another Italian league juggernauts Juventus during the 2000/01 season and led them to the league title as well.

With AC Milan, he then went on to win his first Champions League during the 2002/03 season and then again won the same competition in 2006/07 establishing himself as one of the most acclaimed in the game.

Winning “La Decima” with Real Madrid (2014)

Real Madrid, one of the most decorated clubs in European competitions were on the lookout for something that had been eluding them for quite some time, their 10th Champions League trophy.

Ancelotti (“La Decima”), already an expert in this competition took Madrid to the finals where they met their fierce local rivals Atlético de Madrid in a face-off. In the 36th minute of the match Atlético’s Diego Godin gave his team a lead and then started to play with a defensive shape. Ancelotti’s team equalised in the dire end of the match and then won the match during stoppage time thus achieving the all-elusive “La Decima.”

Premier League title with Chelsea (2009/10)

One of the most iconic moments of Ancelotti’s career came with the London-based English Premier League club Chelsea when he won the league title with them. Under Ancelotti, Chelsea reportedly became a goal-scoring machine where they scored 103 goals throughout that season, 17 more than league counterparts Manchester United. They also won the title in style, destroying fellow Premier League team Wigan with a massive 8-0 win.

Ancelotti is currently under contract with Real Madrid till 2024. With last night’s win, Madrid are top of their group table in the Champions League and already booked their place in the last 16 stage of the competition.
