Cardinals hand Rockies worst 100-game start in 109 years

The St. Louis Cardinals snapped a three-game skid with a 6-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night in Denver, powered by Willson Contreras and a strong outing from Michael McGreevy.

The Rockies dropped to 24-76, becoming the first team since the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics to lose more than 75 of their first 100 games.

Contreras fell just a triple short of the cycle, hitting his 13th home run and driving in two runs. McGreevy, recalled from Triple-A Memphis earlier in the day, delivered his longest outing of the season, going seven innings while allowing two runs on seven hits with no walks.


Masyn Winn added three hits, while Nolan Arenado, Brendan Donovan, and Jordan Walker each had two to help fuel the Cardinals’ offense. St. Louis overcame an early 2-0 deficit after Colorado took advantage of a misplay by center fielder Victor Scott II in the third inning.

The Rockies’ Hunter Goodman drove in a run as part of that rally, but McGreevy regrouped to retire 11 straight and keep Colorado quiet the rest of the way.

The Cardinals responded quickly, with Contreras launching a leadoff homer in the fourth to get them on the board. Arenado and Winn followed with back-to-back doubles to tie the game, and St. Louis kept the momentum going.

Contreras doubled in another run in the fifth, and RBI hits from Pedro Pages and Jordan Walker in the sixth and seventh helped extend the lead.

Austin Gomber (0-4) took the loss for Colorado, surrendering five runs on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings despite striking out a season-high six.
