Cragen concluded, "It has been a privilege to have been able to serve with you."

Following the video, Benson addressed her squad about their former captain. "He was the best boss I ever had," Benson told her squad. "Everything that I know about being a Captain, I learned from him."

Captain Cragen's retirement from Law & Order SVU

Captain Cragen retired from SVU in Season 15, Episode 11 ("Amaro's One-Eighty"). The retirement episode showed Cragen passing command responsibilities to Detective Benson, who succeeded him as commanding officer.

During his retirement announcement, Cragen explained his decision to leave the department. "Eileen has two tickets for a six-month cruise, and I have enough accrued leave to take me through my mandatory retirement date," Cragen said. "If I stay, I might make less than if I leave."

Cragen offered advice to his successor before departing. "Word of advice? I gave my whole life to the NYPD and I forgot to live my own... But people used to say this to me all of the time, and I never understood what they meant. But take care of yourself. You deserve it."

Guest appearances following SVU departure

After retiring as commanding officer, Captain Cragen made several guest appearances on Law & Order SVU. The character returned in Season 16's "Perverted Justice" and appeared in Season 23's milestone "The Five Hundredth Episode."
