The city of Berkeley in the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California was jolted by two earthquakes on Monday (September 22, 2025). An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 shook the city during the wee hours shortly before 3 AM. The second quake which occurred 16 hours after the first one, was of magnitude 3.0. It happened at 6:21 PM in Berkeley, about one mile away from the first quake, according to KRON4.

The 4.3 magnitude quake hit just east-southeast of Berkeley, across the bay from San Francisco, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, or USGS. No injuries or major damage were reported, but some businesses said windows were broken and merchandise tumbled from shelves. “Things were shaking in our newsroom,” posted Dave Clark, a news anchor for KTVU-TV. “It caught everyone off guard.”

The early morning earthquake was felt across the East Bay in Walnut Creek, Martinez, and Alameda, and across the Bay in San Francisco and Sausalito, according to KRON4. The USGS said another 2.6-magnitude earthquake occurred in that area around 8:01 a.m.

Bay Area Rapid Transit trains ran with delays for several hours as crews made safety inspections of the tracks systemwide. BART said trains returned to regular service around midday.

People reported feeling shaking as far away as Salinas, about 100 miles (161 kilometers) to the south, news agency AP reported, citing reports. “As far as earthquakes go, this is kind of the ones where people feel them, but there's not a whole lot of impacts to them,” said Brayden Murdock of the National Weather Service in Monterey, as quoted by AP.

The epicenter of Monday evening’s earthquake is about one mile away from the epicenter of the 4.3 earthquake early Monday morning, according to USGS.

The earthquake that struck Berkeley comes after it was predicted that there was about a 14% chance of an aftershock (in relation to the 4.3 Berkeley quake) between 3.0 and 4.0 within the next week, according to the USGS, as reported by KRON4. The most recent earthquake was felt in Pinole.
