California Is Testing “Wildlife Bridges”, And A Lot of Reptiles Have Started Using Them
Until we understand their importance in addressing the dangers animals face on roads, the idea of wildlife crossings may seem quite obscure. According to ecological studies, roads lead to habitat disruption, migration interruption, and mortality due to high roadkill concentrations occurring in selected locations. Animal fatalities associated with amphibian and reptile populations do not occur randomly but at selected hot spots, as reported by an article accessible on PMC. What is important about the construction of crossings is that it is not random but occurs in locations where the animal is moving. Highway crossings of wildlife passages have led to the incorporation of wildlife crossings in transport systems, especially in California.

Design actually matters more

A bridge or tunnel is not sufficient; there must be use by animals. Studies conducted by Biological Conservation indicate that reptiles and amphibians pay attention to issues such as structural form, moisture, and cover when deciding whether or not to enter crossings. Therefore, a successful design involves all three aspects. According to a report from the United States Geological Survey, fencing is commonly applied to direct animals into crossings in the form of bridges and tunnels, instead of permitting random approaches on the part of animals towards roads. In essence, the crossing should blend seamlessly with the natural habitat. As far as snakes are concerned, cover and edges are vital.

The Effectiveness

Do these crossings actually work?

There are sufficient reasons to support this claim. In 2025, a study published in Ecological Engineering confirmed that wildlife underpasses lowered amphibian road mortality by more than 80%. This number alone is impressive and has implications for survivability on a demographic scale. Several other studies conducted over extended periods of time prove that wildlife bridges allow for restoring mobility in cases where the road divides habitats. This is important because surviving on the road is not only about preventing collisions with vehicles but also maintaining their natural cycle of reproduction and feeding. It can be said that this point is based on fairly solid evidence as well. Even though wildlife bridges may not provide the complete solution to the problem at hand, they are effective when built in appropriate locations and taking into account animal mobility patterns.
