California’s CalFresh food (SNAP) benefits are back on a normal schedule this month after November’s partial federal government shutdown temporarily disrupted SNAP funding, causing delays and confusion for thousands of households. December payments are now being issued through the state’s Golden State Advantage EBT system. Here is what you can buy with a CalFresh EBT Card.

What you can buy with your CalFresh EBT card

As per Futbolete, the CalFresh EBT card works like a debit card and is loaded once a month with your approved food benefits. You can use it to buy most groceries for home cooking, including:

  • Fruits and vegetables

  • Meat, poultry, and fish

  • Dairy products

  • Bread, cereals, and grains

  • Seeds and plants that grow food

What you can not buy with CalFresh EBT card

But the card cannot be used for alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, medicine, cleaning items, non-food products, or hot prepared foods. Unused funds stay on your card and carry over to the next month.

The Golden State Advantage EBT card works like a debit card, with monthly CalFresh benefits deposited electronically. Recipients can use it to purchase most grocery items, including fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, bread, cereals, and even seeds to grow food.

However, EBT cannot be used to buy alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, medications, cleaning supplies, non-food products, or hot prepared foods. Unused benefits roll over month to month.

New CalFresh rules for seniors and people with disabilities

Beginning December 1, 2025, households with two or more seniors (60+) or disabled adults will receive a minimum of $60 per month, even if their calculated benefits fall below that level, notes the outlet. A simplified rule from November 2025 also makes it easier for them to qualify for higher benefits by allowing a utility deduction without proving heating or cooling costs.

FAQs about the CalFresh fruit and vegetable EBT program

Can anyone on CalFresh use the Fruit and Vegetable EBT Program?

Yes. Anyone receiving CalFresh automatically qualifies. Your EBT card serves as proof, no separate application is needed.

Can I use the program at any store that accepts EBT?

No. It only works at participating stores, mostly in Santa Clara County, plus select locations in Alameda, Monterey, Salinas, and Los Angeles.

How does the instant produce rebate work at checkout with CalFresh?

You shop normally and pay with your EBT card. The cost of eligible fresh produce is deducted, then instantly added back, making the produce free, up to $60 per month.

Does the $60 monthly produce benefit depend on my CalFresh amount?

No. Every CalFresh household gets up to $60 in free produce monthly, regardless of their regular benefit amount.

Can I use the program if my EBT balance is zero?

No. You must have some funds available to trigger the instant rebate. Once your card reloads, the program works again.

How long will the program last?

Current funding is expected to last through summer 2026, but continuation depends on usage and renewed state funding.
