Roads leading away from the Burning Man festival are likely to be reopened on Monday, bringing relief to the tens of thousands of attendees who have been stranded in the Nevada desert for a third consecutive day. The development comes following heavy rainfall that inundated the festival grounds with ankle-deep mud, rendering them impassable and necessitating shelter-in-place orders issued by the organizers, as per reports.

Both the ingress and egress routes to and from the event site in the Black Rock Desert were shut down on Saturday, and festivalgoers were instructed to conserve their supplies of food, water, and fuel due to the extremely challenging conditions caused by the downpour, reports stated.

While the weeklong festival is slated to conclude on Monday, the exact timing of when attendees will be permitted to depart the area remains uncertain. Organizers are expected to announce their plans for reopening the roads on Monday morning.

As of a Sunday night update from Burning Man organizers, an estimated 72,000 individuals are still present on the festival grounds.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the traditional burning of the festival's iconic man-shaped effigy, which was originally scheduled for Sunday night, will now take place on Monday.

This remote region in northwest Nevada experienced a deluge equivalent to 2 to 3 months' worth of rainfall, totaling up to 0.8 inches, within a 24-hour period between Friday and Saturday morning. The rain, falling on previously dry desert terrain, created a thick, clay-like mud that some festival attendees have had to contend with by improvising with bags tied around their feet for mobility.
