Company officials stressed that the revamp stops short of altering the flame-grilled beef patty or core ingredients such as lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles.

Curtis described the update as a refinement rather than an overhaul, saying the company did not want to “tear up the playbook.” Instead, he likened the move to “putting our famous iconic burger in a tuxedo instead of a leisure suit.”

The Whopper, first introduced in 1956 by co-founder James McLamore, remains one of the most recognisable items in the fast-food industry. It was conceived after McLamore and business partner David Edgerton observed the popularity of larger burgers at competing drive-ins and sought to create a similarly substantial offering for their Miami-area stores.

According to Technomic, Burger King ranks as the eighth-largest fast-food chain in the United States by sales. However, around 2023, customer feedback increasingly cited outdated stores, inconsistent service and food quality concerns.

The company has since focused on operational improvements and restaurant modernisation. Recent quarterly figures showed US same-store sales rising 3.2 per cent, suggesting a recovery may be underway.

Still, the environment remains challenging. Inflationary pressures have constrained consumer spending, and competition from rivals such as McDonald's and Five Guys remains intense.

Robert Byrne, senior director of consumer research at Technomic, noted that franchisees face higher labour and operating costs, making additional investment difficult. The new Whopper upgrades are estimated to cost franchisees about $4,000 annually. Corporate leadership has advised operators not to raise prices, arguing that the improvements will drive higher sales volumes, as per a report by CNN.

In a bid to gather direct feedback, Curtis also shared his phone number publicly for a limited period, fielding thousands of customer calls. He said recurring suggestions, including requests to improve French fries, have informed future menu considerations.

The chain maintains that subtle enhancements will appeal both to loyal customers and to those who may have drifted away from the brand.
