Budweiser is the official sponsor of this year's FIFA World Cup. Though rules were relaxed then, with FIFA and Budweiser agreeing on a particular marketing strategy for the game, the alcohol stricture has been kicked in.

Fans will not be able to buy beer in the stadiums even though Budweiser was allowed initially to do so. It would be in place from the first game between Qatar and Ecuador.

Qatar has not officially issued a statement, but a source says that the general feeling of fans is that alcohol is not a part of Qatar's culture. Stadium crowds would not be comfortable with alcohol being served.


It was decided earlier that fans would be informed about alcohol and alcohol-free zones, and it is for them to choose their area of viewing the matches.

However, with Qatar being a Muslim country, the decision to allow alcohol at the stadiums has been revoked completely. It must be noted that alcohol is sold within the hotel premises and inside bars away from the public eye. The Royal Al Thani family has not allowed the sale of alcohol openly in the stadiums. A tweet from the official Budweiser account on Friday morning, which was later deleted, simply said: "Well, this is awkward..."
