BTS star Jin begins mandatory military service at Yeoncheon army base, read details

Jin, who is 30, will serve 18 months in training after entering the Yeoncheon army post in the northern part of Gyeonggi province, South Korea.

Their security and the media outnumbered a few hundred admirers who had arrived to see the star despite his earlier requests to stay away.

A convoy of six black vehicles said to be carrying Jin and his security team arrived at the facility before 2 PM. Numerous flags greeted Jin and the other trainees as they approached the facility, less than 10 miles from the Demilitarized Zone, which divides North Korea and South Korea.



Kim Seok-jin, 20, of Daejon, who has the same surname as the rockstar recruit, was among the conscripts who joined the 5th Infantry Division on Tuesday. Kim was standing past a restaurant from the base with his parents, sporting his new haircut which is the same style Jin had had a few days previously - and saying he was worried about going inside.

Lee Hey-Kyoung, a 40-year-old Seoul resident who combined metro, bus, and taxi journeys to the facility Tuesday morning, was among the BTS supporters outside the base. Military duty is mandatory in South Korea, where practically all non-disabled men must serve in the army for 18 months by age 28.

In 2020, South Korea's government enacted legislation enabling pop stars or those who excel in popular culture and art, to postpone their military service until they are 30.
