Bryan Kohberger’s prison transfer delayed
Bryan Kohberger, convicted for the brutal murders of four University of Idaho students in 2022, will not be transferred to a prison facility immediately following his sentencing. Despite receiving four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole on July 23, 2025, Kohberger remains temporarily housed at the Ada County Jail as he undergoes a crucial intake evaluation process.

Following his sentencing, Kohberger is scheduled to begin a Reception and Diagnostic Unit (RDU) evaluation process conducted by the Idaho Department of Corrections (IDOC), likely starting the day after his sentence was handed down. A spokesperson for the IDOC told PEOPLE that this evaluation typically lasts between one and two weeks.

The RDU procedure is a standard intake process for all inmates entering Idaho’s prison system. During this period, corrections officials assess each individual’s medical, psychological, and security needs to determine the most appropriate housing placement. The spokesperson emphasized that no specific information about Kohberger or any other prisoner is disclosed prior to incarceration, citing safety and security protocols.

"We wait until a person completes RDU to determine their classification or housing placement," the spokesperson explained. Once this evaluation is complete, Kohberger is expected to be assigned to the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, the state’s only maximum-security prison, though officials have also mentioned the possibility of transferring him to an out-of-state facility due to his high-profile case.

This phased intake and classification system is vital in managing prison populations effectively, especially in cases involving notorious criminals. Thus, despite the gravity of his sentence, Bryan Kohberger’s immediate transfer to prison is postponed pending the necessary evaluation to determine the most suitable and secure correctional placement.
