It was on Broadway that he began his career, understudying Al Pacino in the 1983 production of "American Buffalo." Later he took on the leading role.
MacVittie's stellar career spans a good number of renowned shows, including guest roles in “Sex and the City”, “Miami Vice,” “Oz”, “Chicago Med”, “Blue Bloods,” and “The Deuce.” The native Rhode Islander also acted in films like “Hannibal”, “Stonewall,” and “Brooklyn’s Finest.”
He was best known for starring in "When They See Us," the renowned Netflix limited series which won Emmy. This role was one of his final roles.
Al Pacino has a high opinion of his co-star. He said that his performances were always a heart and a joy to watch. In New York City, he symbolized the struggles of the struggling actor, and he made it work. He will be missed.

MacVittie was born on October 14, 1956, in Providence, Rhode Island, and graduated with a BFA from Boston University in 1979. He's since performed in a number of off-Broadway roles. American Buffalo, a play by David Mamet, was his Broadway debut in 1983, and he then toured the country and performed at London's West End.
A member of the founding troupe of Naked Angels, which took root in 1986, MacVittie has worked with actresses such as Marisa Tomei, Gina Gershon, and Mary Stuart Masterson over the years.
