On Wednesday morning, a gas explosion shook an apartment building in the Bronx, causing part of the building to fall down and a huge emergency response. The event took place at NYCHA's Mitchel Houses in the Mott Haven area just after 8 a.m. It shook the neighborhood and made people worried, as per a report by ABC 7 Eyewitness News.

It took place shortly after 8 a.m. at NYCHA's Mitchel Houses on Alexander Avenue in the Mott Haven neighborhood.

What part of the building collapsed?


The 17-story building's incinerator shaft collapsed due to the explosion. The Department of Buildings was looking into that, but the rest of the building seemed stable and unaffected by the apartments.

Although there is a school across the street, no evacuation was announced, as per a report by ABC 7 Eyewitness News.

To ensure there are no injuries, the city will use dogs and drones to search the damaged area. No injuries have been reported as of yet. While the building is being inspected, residents are being transferred to a community center located at 138th Street and Alexander Avenue.

What are officials doing?

The Department of Environmental Protection, the NYC Buildings Department, the NYPD, and the FDNY all arrived on the scene. Con Edison turned off the affected building's gas supply. There were also reports of an underground water main collapsing due to the explosion, as per a report by ABC 7 Eyewitness News.
