The incident occurred at approximately 7:06 pm local time when first responders arrived at the intersection of 955 Westchester Avenue (near Intervale Avenue and Kelly Street) in the Longwood section. The call initially reported a car fire and a trash fire in front of a multi‑story building, according to the FDNY. According to New York Post, Firefighters rapidly engaged the blaze, bringing the fire under control by 8:19 pm, FDNY confirmed.
Video captured by bystanders shows a giant orange fireball erupting from the vehicle, accompanied by towering plumes of smoke that illuminated the sky above the Bronx neighborhood. Witnesses said the explosion shook surrounding buildings and startled residents several blocks away.
No pedestrian injuries have been reported so far, according to the NYPD.
While the blast itself is under investigation, the timing adds a political dimension as it occurred just a day after Zohran Mamdani was elected New York City mayor. Observers note that early public-safety incidents like this one may put additional pressure on the incoming administration, highlighting the challenges Mamdani will face in coordinating emergency services and addressing neighborhood safety even before officially taking office.
