Bristol's Premier Cinema Announces Closure; More Deets Here

Bristol's one of the premier city center cinemas is set to be closed at the end of this month. The iconic cinema named 'The Showcase Cinema de Lux' located in Cabot Circus will screen its final film on November 30. People inquiring about ticket reservations for upcoming December films are being informed that the cinema is no longer accepting bookings. Instead, they are being directed to the city's alternative Showcase cinema located at the Avonmeads Retail Park in St Philips.

Further, the official website of the Showcase is not allowing bookings for the city center cinema beyond November 30, with all future dates greyed out.

Expressing his disappointment, Gordon Bottoms from Lime Kiln Road urged Cabot Circus management to seek a compromise.


Adding more, Bottoms said that various restaurants in nearby areas have clauses in their leases that presume the presence of a multi-screen cinema in Cabot Circus, anticipating its ability to attract large crowds. Bottoms also mentioned that without this, it is expected that some of the restaurants will be forced to close. As a result, Cabot Circus will lose much of its attraction as a shopping, eating, and entertainment center.

As soon as the news of the cinema's closure went viral, several people reacted to it and expressed their disappointment.

Meanwhile, the official reason for the closure is yet to be revealed. People have also expressed their concern that cinemas are losing their charm day by day due to the rise in streaming services such as Netflix.

According to the details shared by a source close to Cabot Circus staff, since the cinema witnessed a decline in sales of tickets post-COVID years including 2020, and 2021, this could be one of the reasons for the closure of the cinema.

The 14-screen Showcase Cinema de Lux is the biggest cinema in Bristol. Further, the Showcase at Avonmeads also has the same number of screens. Opened in 2008, the Showcase at Avonmeads was considered one of the most iconic places that gained major tourist attraction.
