The world's fourth-largest democracy is being tested in Sunday's key presidential election in Brazil, which could significantly impact the fight against climate change.

Brazen Christian nationalist and president Jair Bolsonaro has been under fire for escalating destruction of the Amazon, handling Brazil's COVID-19 response poorly, and raising questions about the country's electoral process.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, better known as Lula, a former president and one of Latin America's most illustrious leftists, will give him a tough fight. After significant corruption scandals discredited his Marxist Workers' Party and landed da Silva in jail for more than a year, da Silva must overcome voter distrust. Since he received the most votes in the first round four weeks ago, his advantage in the polls has shrunk.


Da Silva currently leads all significant surveys, but Bolsonaro is closing the gap. Former President da Silva received 48% of the vote in the first round on 2nd October compared to Bolsonaro's 43 per cent, a difference of about 6 million voters.

Da Silva received 50 per cent of the vote on Monday, according to the IPEC polling company, while Bolsonaro received 43%, with a margin of error of 2%.
