Boyle Heights street renamed after late singer Vicente Fernández. Check out the details

On the auspicious occasion of the Independence Day of Mexico, a street in Boyle Heights, a neighbourhood in Los Angeles, has been renamed in honour of late singer and actor Vicente Fernandez.

A special ceremony was held to declare Bailey Street after Vicente Fernandez officially.

What was the proposal, and where is the Street named after Vicente Fernandez?

The street is located east of Mariachi Plaza between Pennsylvania Avenue and 1st Street in the Boyle Heights neighbourhood of Los Angeles. The proposal for renaming the street was first proposed by Log Angeles Councilmember Kevin de Leon earlier this year. The move honoured the legendary musician and his contribution to the music industry.




The Councilman, after the approval, said that the legacy of Vicente Fernandez continues to reverberate in the hearts of millions and has been inspiring many worldwide, making every one of us Latino proud. He said that Vincente had carved his place in history, and fans will cherish him forever. Kevin de Leon also said many people ask about who he is, Vicente, and he tells them to think about Frank Sinatra and what he meant for millions of Americans.

The proposal also came under criticism and was opposed by the vice president of Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council and chair of its Planning and Land Use Committee, David Silvas, who sent a letter to the City Council’s Public Works Committee. He cited a comment in the letter made by Fernandez during an interview, where the latter denied a liver transplant from the donor, referring to his homosexual identity. Silvas also mentioned reports of him being accused of touching women inappropriately, and renaming Bailey Street would insult the victims of sexual abuse.

The famed musician, Vicente Fernandez, received several awards and honours throughout his lifetime. Apart from winning four Grammy Awards and nine Latin Grammy awards, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, 14 Lo Nuestro Awards, and Orden Libertadores y Libertadores de Venezuela (Order of the Liberator) in 2012. His albums managed to sell over 50 million copies worldwide.

The singer died at 81, following several health issues and a severe cervical spine injury in 2021, in Guadalajara, Mexico.
