A consumer advocacy group is urging people across the US to stop shopping at Walmart for one week. People’s Union USA says the company is hurting small businesses and not paying its workers fairly.

Boycott Targets Walmart

The group announced the boycott would begin on May 20 and continue until May 26. It applies to shopping at Walmart stores, Walmart’s online platforms and its affiliated businesses. These include Sam’s Club and private brands, such as Great Value and Equate.

Why is People’s Union USA Targeting Walmart?

John Schwarz, who founded People’s Union USA, posted a video message on Instagram. In it, he explained why the group is organizing the boycott. Schwarz said Walmart has made record profits and used tax breaks. He added that the company still plans to raise prices despite these advantages.

Tariffs and Price Hikes

Schwarz criticized Walmart’s plan to raise prices due to tariffs. He said the company could absorb the added costs but chooses to pass them on to customers. Walmart recently said in an earnings call that the company cannot fully absorb the costs of new tariffs. CEO Doug McMillon said the company will try to keep prices low, but added that retail margins are small.

Where is Next Boycott?

People’s Union USA also plans other boycotts. A boycott of Target is set for June 3 to 9. A boycott of McDonald’s is planned for June 24 to 30. The group is also organizing an Independence Day boycott on July 4.

Previous Actions

Earlier in March, the group launched an “economic blackout” against Amazon. It asked customers not to buy from Amazon or its subsidiaries. These include Alexa, Prime Video, Whole Foods and others. The goal was to reduce Amazon’s sales and protest its practices.

Movement Gains Support

Schwarz said the earlier boycott reached people in many countries. He received messages of support from around the world. Many asked how they could show solidarity with the cause.
