Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ earns USD 120 million on debut

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ set the domestic box-office bell ringing as it earned a whopping amount of USD 120.5 million in its first week.

It became the year’s second biggest opening weekend after “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, which earned USD 146 million. It also became the third-biggest opening weekend for any “Spider-Man” movie.

The animated sequel of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” enjoyed rave reviews. The 2018’s Oscar-winning film introduced Miles Morales and came out with the idea of ‘anyone can wear the mask’, but it could earn only USD 35.5 million in the first week.


Directed by Kemp Powers, Joaquim Dos Santos and Justin K. Thompson, the film narrates the story of Miles and Gwen Stacy as they try to save fellow Spider-People from villain Spot. Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld have voiced Miles and Gwen respectively.

Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” remake came second at the box office with USD 40.6 million, though it has stars like Halle Bailey as Ariel and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

Disney and 20th Century’s The Boogeyman occupy third place with an earning of USD 12.3 million. It was adapted from Stephen King’s short story of the same name.

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has been pushed to fourth place at the box office as it had a first-week collection of USD 10.2 million. Universal’s “Fast X” finished fifth as it earned USD 9.2 million at the domestic box office.

Talking to Variety, David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research, said, “This is an exceptionally good opening for an animation follow-up sequel. Spider-Verse took a well-liked superhero, gave the storytelling an original visual style and voice, and created a unique experience.”
