Boston Red Sox's Xander Bogaerts agrees to $280 million contract with San Diego Padres

Xander Bogaerts' $280 million contract with the San Diego Padres is the seventh-biggest free agency contract in Baseball history, and it would have been the Red Sox’s highest pay ever. However, according to rumours, the Red Sox bid was not even closer.

Red Sox had offered a six-year contract for about $160 million to Xander Bogaerts.

On Thursday morning, Alex Speier, the Boston Globe fame, tweeted that the Red Sox had given Bogaerts a six-year contract for about $160 million. Between extensions and free agent contracts, the contract is the 12th-largest in MLB history. Mookie Betts, a former Red Sox player, owns the record with his 12-year, $365 million contract deal with the Dodgers.




Bogaerts has been in the headlines for his decision to end the contract for over a year. When in 2019, the Red Sox signed a six-year, $120 million agreement, Bogaerts' agent, Scott Boras, devised an opt-out clause that permitted Bogaerts to become a free agent after 2022.

Bogaerts was offered a four-year, $90 million extended offer to which he disagreed; Bogaerts opted out, and the start of free agency.

Bogaerts is the second notable free-agent shortstop to sign, following Trea Turner. Earlier this week, he signed a $300 million deal with the Phillies for eleven years.
