Borderlands 4 release date, system requirements: Video game launch preponed. Is GTA 6 the reason?

Gearbox has officially confirmed that Borderlands 4 will now release earlier than its predetermined date of September 23. The game will now be launched on September 12, 2025. The announcement was made through a video posted by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford.

Pitchford, in the video, explained that the development of the game went smoothly and thus, the team decided to launch it earlier. He mentioned that everything about the game release has been unfolding in the best-case scenario manner. He also called the game awesome and informed that the team is moving the launch date forward.

Reportedly, the title will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

Speculation mounts over GTA 6 and internal scheduling

Even though Gearbox claimed that the decision stemmed from early development success, many in the gaming community believed the shift may be strategic. They, as per the reports, believed that the launch was moved forward to avoid a head-on collision with the much-anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Both games are linked through their shared publisher, Take-Two Interactive. The organisation may be spacing out their major titles to maximise sales and media coverage.

A VICE report stated the speculations also arose since Rockstar has not announced the launch date for GTA 6 but claimed that it is still on track to release the game in 2025.

Take-Two Interactive CEO speaks about overlapping releases

The CEO of Take-Two Interactive, Strauss Zelnick earlier addressed concerns about the overlapping release. Zelnick said that the company carefully plans their timelines to respect the consumer’s need to spend a lot of time playing the hit games before they move on to the next.

As per an IGN report, the rumour mills stated that Borderlands 4 is moving out of the path of either GTA 6—expected in autumn 2025—or Marathon, Bungie’s multiplayer shooter game, which is also scheduled for a late September 2025 release.

PlayStation State of Play coming April 30

In addition to the release date announcement, Pitchford teased a Borderlands 4-themed PlayStation State of Play, which Sony has now confirmed for April 30 at 2 PM PT / 10 PM BST. The 20-minute presentation is likely to go into more detail regarding gameplay, characters, and features.
