A total lunar eclipse will happen this week as the Earth moves between the sun and the moon. This will block sunlight from reaching the moon, making it appear dark red, often called a "blood moon." The event will be visible across North America and other regions if the sky is clear.

Lunar Eclipse Timing and Visibility

The total lunar eclipse will start late Thursday and continue into early Friday. It will be visible across North America and South America. Some regions in Western Europe, Western Africa, and New Zealand may also witness part of the eclipse.

Weather Conditions

Clouds and storms may make it difficult to see the eclipse in some areas. A strong weather system in March could bring overcast skies, blocking the view. However, some locations will have better conditions.

Best Locations for Viewing

The best weather for viewing is expected in Texas, the Ohio Valley, and southern Florida. Miami, for example, is forecast to have only 3% cloud cover during the eclipse. Parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri are also expected to have clear skies.

Duration of the Eclipse

The total lunar eclipse will last for more than an hour. This is longer than the total solar eclipse in April, which lasted only a few minutes. Even if there are clouds, gaps in the sky may allow brief glimpses of the eclipse.

Online Livestreams

For those unable to watch in person, several livestreams will be available. The Adler Planetarium will stream the event from Southern Illinois University Carbondale starting at 10 p.m. EDT. The Griffith Observatory in California will broadcast the eclipse from 11:50 p.m. to 6:05 a.m. EDT.
