Members of the South Korean girl group Blackpink have been awarded honorary MBEs as part of the King's K-pop diplomacy.

It comes during South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's state visit, during which King Charles hailed the global influence of Korean pop culture.

The King mentioned Blackpink for their support of environmental causes.

"I can only admire how they can prioritize these vital issues, as well as being global superstars," King Charles said.

The MBEs acknowledge the female group's role as ambassadors for the COP climate change summit (Cop26 Summit in Glasgow) and as champions for the UN's sustainable development goals, assisting in bringing the environmental message to ‘millions of young people.’

This morning, a unique investiture took place in Buckingham Palace's 1844 room, which is frequently used for the most prestigious guests.

It was yet another example of the red carpet that was put out during this South Korean state visit, with diplomatic wooing reflecting the growing importance of this strategic ally and economic partner.

Roseanne Park, Jennie Kim, Jisoo Kim, and Lalisa Manoban of Blackpink are now honorary members of the Order of the British Empire and attended the state banquet at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening.

The King's address highlighted South Korean popular culture's ‘remarkable ability to captivate imaginations’ and its ‘global reach.’

While the King accepted a lack of ‘what might be called Gangnam Style’, the military band for the changing of the guard made amends on Wednesday morning by playing the song in an unexpected musical direction change.

Instead of marching sounds, tourists gathering outside Buckingham Palace to see the changing of the guard heard a surprise medley of K-pop music.
