Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping events of the year, taking place annually on the day after Thanksgiving in the United States. It marks the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, with retailers offering some of their steepest discounts on electronics, clothing, toys, home goods, and more.


The term 'Black Friday' originated in the 1950s, when Philadelphia police used it to describe the heavy traffic and crowded streets caused by shoppers flooding the city. Over time, it evolved into a nationwide sales phenomenon. Today, Black Friday spans both in-store and online deals, often extending through Cyber Monday.

Black Friday takes place the day after Thanksgiving, which falls on Thursday, November 27 this year. As a result, the shopping event will start from Friday, November 28.

WHEN DOES AMAZON’S BLACK FRIDAY SALE START?

Amazon’s Black Friday 2025 sale kicks off early on Thursday, November 20, with new discounts expected to roll out steadily through Cyber Week. According to USA Today, the biggest bargains to drop on Black Friday itself, with deals tapering off after Cyber Monday on December 1. Shoppers can expect up to 50% off Amazon devices such as Echo speakers, Fire TVs, Fire Sticks, Kindles, and Ring doorbells. Popular brands in apparel and home categories - including Levi’s, Carhartt, Nike, Dyson, KitchenAid, and Bissell - will also see markdowns of up to 55%.

WHEN DOES WALMART'S BLACK FRIDAY SALE START?

Walmart’s Black Friday deals will run online from November 25-27, followed by both online and in-store discounts from November 28-30, reported USA Today. Shoppers can find up to 60% off a wide range of items, including cookware, beauty products, toys, and apparel.

In the lead-up to Black Friday, Walmart is also offering 50% off its annual Walmart+ membership, which provides early deal access, free delivery and shipping, Paramount+ streaming, fuel savings, and other benefits.

Walmart stores will remain closed on Thanksgiving but reopen at 6 AM local time on Black Friday.

WHEN DOES TARGET'S BLACK FRIDAY SALE START?

Target’s Black Friday sale launches online on Sunday, November 23. The retailer actually began rolling out early weekly discounts on November 2, with new deals released every Sunday through Christmas Eve. Target is also offering daily specials featuring even steeper markdowns, often around 50% off.

According to USA Today, this week’s promotions (November 16-22) include $20 Thanksgiving meals for four, up to 40% off holiday décor, up to 50% off major toy brands, and savings on tech items like Beats headphones and Samsung TVs.

Target will remain closed on Thanksgiving, reopening at 6 AM. local time on Friday, November 28.

WHEN DOES MACY'S BLACK FRIDAY SALE START?

Macy’s is rolling out a full slate of Black Friday-themed promotions this year, starting with its 'Parade of Deals', which kicked off on November 2. The retailer followed that with a Black Friday Early Access event from November 10-13, its Black Friday Starts Now sale from November 14-22, and Black Friday Week deals running November 23-30.

According to USA today, the differences between these events are minimal - they primarily allow Macy’s to extend its discount period. Shoppers can find 40-50% off women’s shoes, up to 75% off fine jewelry, 50-60% off men’s coats, 20-40% off LEGO sets, 70% off select mattresses, and $50-$350 off Dyson home products.

WHEN DOES BEST BUY'S BLACK FRIDAY SALE START?

Best Buy’s Black Friday sale launches more than a week early on Thursday, November 20, with additional waves of discounts dropping on November 21 and again on Black Friday to ramp up the savings, reported USA Today. Shoppers who miss out won’t have to wait long - Best Buy’s Cyber Sunday and Cyber Monday event begins on Sunday, November 30.

Early previews highlight up to 25% off Apple products such as the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and iPhone 16, up to 45% off laptops including the HP OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1 and Lenovo Yoga 16-inch Intel Core Ultra 7, and as much as 50% off TVs like the TCL 55" Class F35 Fire TV and Samsung’s 65" Frame Series QLED 4K TV.

Best Buy will be closed on Thanksgiving and reopen at 6 AM on November 28, with extended hours until 10 PM.
