Billie Eilish and Finneas made history as the first songwriters to receive the Chairman's Award for their hit "What Was I Made For?" from the film "Barbie." Expressing gratitude to their parents and reflecting on their journey as aspiring actors, Eilish opened up about the personal significance of their emotionally charged song. She dedicated the award to those who experience hopelessness and existential dread, emphasizing the message that it's worth persevering through tough times.
Greta Gerwig, the writer and director of "Barbie," presented the glass trophy to Eilish and Finneas. Earlier in the evening, Gerwig received the Director of the Year award, presented by Margot Robbie and America Ferrera. Gerwig shared her own cinematic passion, recounting her childhood experience of running toward the movie screen during "The Muppets Take Manhattan" and pledging to spend her life pursuing that passion.
Paul Giamatti, honored with the Icon Award by his "Sideways" co-star Sandra Oh, emotionally paid tribute to his late mother and older sister. Remembering his first acting teacher, Alan Rickman, Giamatti acknowledged the encouragement he received, reflecting on his diverse roles and the directors he had the privilege to work with.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who received the Breakout Award from Giamatti, fought back tears as she referred to him as her "north star." Expressing gratitude for rare opportunities like the one she experienced, Randolph acknowledged the impact of her seasoned co-star.
Other awards of the evening included Carey Mulligan (International Star Award, Actress), presented by Meryl Streep; Cillian Murphy (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor), presented by Robert Downey Jr.; Colman Domingo (Spotlight Award, Actor), presented by Lenny Kravitz; Danielle Brooks (Spotlight Award, Actress), presented by Taraji P. Henson and Blitz Bazawule; Emma Stone (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress), presented by Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe; Jeffrey Wright (Career Achievement Award), presented by Leslie Uggams; and "Killers of the Flower Moon" – director Martin Scorsese, executive producer and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, and actor Lily Gladstone (Vanguard Award), introduced by Osage Nation Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear.
