Millions of people have suffered from polio, mainly in Asia and Africa, for centuries. But the virus has mutated plenty of times. The polio virus has been contained mainly by choking the endemic transmission of the disease. That has been made possible by orally administering the vaccine to children at a young age, and the immunisation is lifelong.
The world made a promise to #EndPolio for good. No one should live in fear of this preventable disease.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has donated $1.2 billion for the global eradication of polio, which is still cropping up in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The disease has been reported as endemic in Pakistan, where it was found in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. Pakistan has reported 20 cases of polio, whereas Afghanistan has reported 2 cases. The disease has affected Afghanistan mainly due to bans on foreigners and continuing violence by the Taliban. The foundation claims that they have till now contributed $5 billion towards polio. The money is going towards efforts to immunise more people from the dreaded disease, with particular emphasis on Pakistan and Afghanistan. The money would also go into studies and prevention of the virus mutating into new polio variants.
