Biggest UPS strike in US history disrupts parcel service. What we know so far

A strike is brewing at United Parcel Service (UPS), which could be bad news for people. While the Starbucks and Amazon labour movements got the limelight, people were unaware of the clash between UPS and an old American union.

The labour movements at Amazon and Starbucks got attention, but the one at United Parcel Service (UPS) is just catching up. UPS is the most prominent package courier worldwide, and contract negotiations will begin between them and the Teamsters Union before their contract expires in July 2023. Experts predict that package handlers and drivers will strike even before talks have begun. Professor of Labor Relations Todd Vachon says it will be a question of how long the strike will be. He believes the union president took a militant approach, and even if the deal is close to completion, the file and rank will be hungry to fight UPS.

UPS and Teamsters

If a strike were to happen, it would affect almost every household in America. UPS trucks carry around 6 per cent of America's GDP yearly. The nation's supply chain is struggling, and the growth of online retail has made UPS even more crucial. Besides home deliveries, UPS also delivers goods and food to offices, factories, and stores. UPS has 534,000 employees, out of which 350,000 are Teamsters. Since the pandemic started, around 72,000 Teamsters have joined the largest courier company. The numbers are multiplying and can be a cause of concern.

The Conundrum

Amazon, the US Postal Service, and FedEx cannot handle the volume of package deliveries that UPS does. UPS moves 21.5 million packages in the US each day. UPS issued a statement and said they want a contract that is a win for the employees and provides flexibility for UPS to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving industry. It is stated that Teamsters and UPS have collaborated for approximately 100 years to care for their customers and employees. UPS believes they will find common ground and reach a mutually beneficial agreement. Teamsters have not gone on strike against UPS since 1997, and if it were to happen, it would be the United States' biggest strike against one business in history.
