A wave of Arctic air is sweeping through parts of the United States, causing a significant drop in temperatures. The National Weather Service (NWS) has predicted freezing conditions across the Midwest and beyond from Monday.

Cold Front

The National Weather Service has reported that a cold front is moving through the Ohio Valley. This will introduce Arctic air to the Midwest on Monday. Snow showers will accompany this cold front in parts of the Northeast. Isolated snow squalls are also possible, which could cause hazardous travel conditions due to reduced visibility, gusty winds and minor snow accumulation.

Below-Freezing Temperatures

High temperatures in the Midwest and the Ohio Valley are predicted to remain 10 to 20 degrees below average. Overnight temperatures in parts of the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and the interior Northeast are expected to fall into the teens and single digits. Some areas, including parts of the Dakotas, Wisconsin, and Iowa, may experience subzero temperatures. As the air mass moves eastward, the East Coast will also see below-average temperatures by Tuesday.

Heavy Lake-Effect Snow

Colder air moving across the Great Lakes is expected to generate heavy lake-effect snow from late Monday. The NWS has warned that isolated locations east of Lakes Erie and Ontario could see localized snowfall accumulations of 1-2 feet. Meteorologists from AccuWeather have highlighted areas including the Keweenaw Peninsula, the Porcupine Mountains and regions between Munising, Michigan and Whitefish Point, Michigan, as potential spots for significant snow accumulation.
