Beloved Brazilian singer Preta Gil dies of cancer days before returning home from US

Preta Gil, a renowned Brazilian singer, activist, and daughter of music legend Gilberto Gil, died on July 20, 2025, in the United States at the age of 50. She passed away due to complications related to rectal cancer, which was first diagnosed in January 2023.

She had been undergoing treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and was preparing to return to Brazil. However, she fell ill on the way to the airport and was rushed back to the hospital, where she died.

Preta was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer, in 2023. She underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy in Brazil.


After a brief remission, the cancer returned in 2024, affecting her lymph nodes, peritoneum, and ureter. In May 2025, she moved to the US for advanced treatment. She had been hospitalized for 55 days earlier this year.

Legacy of music and activism

Preta Gil was known for blending pop, axé, and MPB in her music. Albums like Prêt-à-Porter (2003), Preta (2005), and Sou Como Sou (2012) made her a beloved figure in Brazilian music. She also appeared in Brazilian TV shows and soap operas.

Beyond her artistic work, she was a vocal advocate for women's rights, racial equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and body positivity.


She openly shared her cancer journey, including using an ileostomy bag, helping to break taboos and inspire others.

Daughter of a cultural icon

Preta was the daughter of Gilberto Gil, a celebrated Brazilian musician and former Minister of Culture.

She was the fourth of his eight children and the goddaughter of legendary singer Gal Costa. She often called composer Caetano Veloso “uncle.”

Preta leaves behind her son Francisco, 28, and granddaughter Sol de Maria, 7. Friends, fans, and fellow artists have paid tribute to her resilience, warmth, and legacy.
