After reaching an agreement on a one-year contract extension with the Belgian Grand Prix, Formula 1 will make its return to Spa-Francorchamps in 2023.

The Belgian Grand Prix will be organized in 2023 as per schedule, Formula One confirmed on Sunday. The confirmation ends rumours about the Grand Prix at the famous Spa-Francorchamps being under threat due to the Qatar Grand Prix. The Belgian Grand Prix was earlier threatened due to the possible return of the Chinese and South African circuits.

According to ESPN report, the slot for the Belgian Grand Prix was confirmed after the Kyalami Circuit, South Africa, needed more time to complete than its scheduled completion in 2023. The delay left a slot free for Spa-Francorchamps, pushing the prestigious Grand Prix to be on the capped list of races for 2023. Under the current contract with the racing teams, F1 can host a maximum of 24 races in a year.

In Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen of the Red Bull Racing Team extended his championship lead with a clinical victory. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez took the second position, while pole-sitter Carlos Sainz finished in third place for Ferrari. Verstappen started from the eighth row, while his Italian teammate was in the first row.

After a safety car led the cars on a formation lap, a red flag was raised to signal the suspension. "It's pretty awful. Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff commented: "In my opinion if it (the weather) doesn't change it's too dangerous. As much as I love racing, this is maybe a step too far."

The Belgian Grand Prix faces an uncertain future despite the extension until 2023. Spa-Francorchamps has been on the circuit for over 70 years. However, the introduction of new Grand Prix circuits has jeopardised the chances of the Belgian Grand Prix in the coming years and may push it out of the F1 calendar.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said in an interview with Sky Sports that having traditional races on the calendar was important. However, the limit of 24 races may not allow the Belgian Grand Prix to be on the calendar for very long. FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem has left it to Stefano to decide the future of the Belgian Grand Prix after the 2023 season. Next year’s Formula One calendar will mark the return of the Chinese Grand Prix and the Qatar Grand Prix, along with a confirmed new race in Las Vegas.
