Rising costs of sustenance in the hospitality world got to one of the most beloved pet bars in the US, Bar K, as the startup announced it was closing shop permanently, and wasn’t even refunding the annual members, reports said.

A dog bar with three locations in the United States, in St. Louis, Kansas City and Oklahoma City, Bar K announced the shutdown of all three stores owing to “financial struggles of the hospitality industry”. It's St. Louis store is Southwest to Forest park area, at 4565 McCree Avenue.

Legal trouble came first

Bar K’s struggles are not new. The owner of Bar K’s St. Louis property, developer Green Street, sued the pet bar in August 2024, claiming $300,000 worth of unpaid rent. However, the company took its case back in September 2024.

“We understand many of you will be upset and disappointed by this result and want to understand the reasons. As is often the case, there isn’t one single cause, but rather a variety of challenges that ultimately proved too difficult for our start-up business to overcome,” Bar K said in its press message, as per the report by ksdk.

No Refunds, But Help Might Come

Citing rising costs of running as one of the primary reasons, Bar K statement also said that refund of membership fees, which ranges from $250 to $500 as per reports, wouldn’t be possible. However, the company statement said that talks are on with similar businesses to create deals for its members as a compensation for the fees they have splurged.

“We have faced the same severe economic challenges as the rest of the hospitality industry, including inflationary costs and expenses, an extremely difficult labor market, and sharply reduced consumer spending. we will be working hard to reach out to pet businesses and other partners in our community to put together a package of benefits to return as much value to you as possible,” the statement said.

The company says that they will be back with more information and in the meantime, want its customers to hug their dogs, according to the report by ksdk.
