The Juneteenth ice cream packed in red, brown, yellow, and green is the official colours of Black History Month. This ice cream launch sparked criticism, and following the backlash, Walmart decided to discontinue selling the Juneteenth ice cream.
Juneteenth is a black holiday and an integral part of black history, and capitalizing on it is the last thing people expected from Walmart. Many people questioned Walmart’s intention behind selling Juneteenth ice cream.
The blurb on Walmart’s Juneteenth ice cream said to share and celebrate African-American culture, emancipation and enduring hope.
Although this was irreconcilable with the critics, they called out Walmart, accusing it of capitalizing on such an emotional and sensitive day. A journalist demanded to know why the word, Juneteeth was trademarked on the ice cream.
In their statement, Walmart apologized to the audience and said that Juneteenth marks the celebration of freedom and independence. After receiving the feedback, they review the assortment and will remove whatever is not approved.
At the same time, some users urged the audience on Twitter to buy Cremalicious ice cream, a black-owned brand that has red velvet cheesecake flavours in its line of products.
A user shared the images of Juneteenth ice cream and Cremalicious ice cream and urged the users to buy the latter.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth falls on June 19 and marks the day that ended slavery in the United States.
In the two years since President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, labour shortages in agriculture have persisted.
It is known as Freedom Day, Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day, and Jubilee day.
What did the audience on Twitter accuse Walmart?
Amber Sherman, a Twitter user, accused Walmart of successfully stealing a black business and rebranding it as Juneteenth ice cream. Capitalizing on such a memorable day is highly disapproved, and Walmart’s lack of empathy is condemned. Roy Wood Jr., a comedian who is one of the critics, shared the images of Juneteenth ice cream on Twitter and asked the audience if they would like to have some Juneteenth ice cream on a Juneteenth plate while sipping Juneteenth Koozie.
