Cast and Crew

The writing-directing team of Henk Handloegten, Achim von Borries, and Tom Tykwer will return for the final season. Lead actors Volker Bruch and Liv Lisa Fries will reprise their roles. In a joint statement, the creative team highlighted the significance of February 1933, when German society was torn apart.

Plot

The new season is based on Volker Kutscher’s fifth novel, "The March Fallen," and is set in February 1933, a critical period in German history. The final season marks a pivotal moment as the Nazis seize power. Jörg Schönenborn of ARD Coordinator Fiction noted that this season illustrates the rapid erosion of democracy in Germany.

Season 5 filming will begin in the fall, pending ARD committee approval.

Production

Sky Deutschland's exit from scripted originals raised concerns about "Babylon Berlin" continuing. Despite these challenges, producers were optimistic about filming a final season. Liv Lisa Fries hinted at plans to shoot in late 2024. The official confirmation came on June 25. X-Filme Creative Pool will produce season 5 in collaboration with Beta Film and local pubcasters ARD Degeto, SWR, WDR, and Radio Bremen.
