Baby formula shortage in U.S: White House tries to find ways to ease crisis
There has been an acute shortage of infant products’ production and import, since last November. The situation has now worsened yet there’s no sign of relief for the parents.

Jenn Psaki, press secretary at the White House, showed concern towards the issue and promised to resolve it soon. There is a 50% shortage of baby formula in North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri, Texas, Tennessee, and Iowa, while families in San Antonio are facing a 57% shortage, which is the highest in the metro areas in the US. She assured the parents that their voices will not go unheard and the government will do everything possible to ease the supply of baby formula. The President, Joe Biden, had a conference with all the major manufacturers of baby formula to discuss the solutions for the shortage in the nation.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is trying to get into action with the states to allow WIC recipients to use their benefits on more formula types and sizes. The administration believes this would mean fast production of the baby formula and hence would solve the shortage problem. According to the White House, the Food and Drug Administration might make an announcement on increasing the rate of imports of baby formula. However, the production rate of baby formula is 98% of what the US consumes, yet it is minorly imported from Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Chile.
What is the effect on baby formula products?
- The majority of the brands of baby products were sold out in the first week of May across all retailers.
- As per an analysis of Datasembly, although the shortage of products had begun in the late last years, the condition has worsened in the last few months.
- The CEO of Datasembly Ben Reich stated the problem is intensified by challenges in the food supply chain, historic inflation and product recall.
- In March, the FDA announced its ‘preliminary findings’ on the failure of formula manufacturers in producing sufficient products and sanitary conditions.
What do Republicans have to say on the matter?
The Republican lawmakers blame Biden and his government. They criticised his administration for its incompetence in dealing with the shortage.
