James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to Avatar, the science fiction epic, is finally set to release globally on Friday, December 16.
Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to receive a mega opening, probably the biggest of all time, as the makers are eyeing a $525 million debut, globally.
According to media reports, the movie’s domestic pre-sales have reached $38 million, which is more than that of “Top Gun: Maverick”, the biggest box office hit of 2022. The movie is trailing behind “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
However, box office pundits believe that Avatar: The Way of Water would easily earn between $150-$175 million on its debut in the domestic market. As per media reports, the film is expected to rake in more than $350 million from overseas markets, taking the overall collection predictions beyond $500 million.
If things turn out as expected, the sequel to James Cameron’s masterpiece will find itself ahead of last year’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($320 million on debut). Thus, Cameron would become the box office king of the world once again. Furthermore, the holiday movie season is about to peak, with no considerable competition to the movie. Thus, Christmas is more likely to be an Avatar affair only.
Similarly, opening 80% of theatres in China post-pandemic would further boost the film’s business prospects. In fact, about $100 million of the movie’s opening revenue is expected to be from China, which has already accounted for $21 million of pre-sales. This gives “The Way of Water” an edge over other blockbusters of the year.
