Based on Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko's animated Nickelodeon series of the same name, 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' has also a few interesting twists in the story. Though the series remains faithful to the original plot, the creators have made certain changes to add new turns to the story and escalate the drama. The most important and dramatic changes have been made to Sozin's Comet, which is used by Fire Lord Sozin to launch a devastating attack on the Air Nomads.

What is 'Sozin's Comet?

Before protagonist Aang reemerges from the ice a century later, Fire Lord Sozin makes a devastating attack on the Southern Air Temple. As a result, the Air Nomads and the art of airbending came to an end. The Fire Nation army also attacked Earth Kingdom and Water Tribe territories on the eve of the Great Comet and brought them to their knees. This is named "Sozin's Comet" in honor of their leader.

Sozin's Comet gives strength to airbenders

However, the firebenders can harness their energy when the comet tracks come close to the planet. The Fire Lord is aware of this phenomenon and so he awaits eagerly to happen it. Sozin's Comet gives firebenders untold strength, they gain "the power of a hundred suns" and become almost unstoppable.

Avatar Roku warns airbenders

In the original story, Avatar Roku, one of the past lives of Aang, warns the airbenders about the imminent return of the Sozin's Comet. But when Aang returns, he has to master the other three elements, defeat Fire Lord Ozai, and restore balance within one year. Aang and his tribe members could not defeat the Fire Nation. The protagonist has to face Phoenix King Ozai instead. But in the end, firebenders Jeong Jeong and Iroh used their enhanced abilities to liberate the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Sae from the Fire Nation.

Impact of Sozin's Comet

Showrunner Albert Kim talked about the substantial changes made to Sozin's Comet. 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' doesn't use Sozin's Comet as a deadline for Aang to master all four elements. However, the celestial event of the comet coming near the planet has a prominent appearance in the show's first episode.
