The final performance of Anton Newcombe's 11-city tour, which was set to conclude on Friday night (Nov. 24) at the University of Wollongong UniBar in New South Wales with The Laurels providing support, has been canceled.
On Tuesday, Nov. 21, the group performed at The Forum Melbourne, their ninth engagement in Australia, when Newcombe and his rotating group of musicians engaged in an odd public display.
In videos posted on social media by fans, Newcombe can be seen criticizing guitarist Ryan Van Kriedt for urging him to get off the stage.
The celebration is done, captain, so shut off this guy's mic and put down my guitar, Newcombe said.
Twenty studio albums into his career as the frontman of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Newcombe's economic success has been overshadowed by his reputation for erratic and eccentric behavior.
For the majority of casual fans, Newcombe will always be most associated with his vibrant, pivotal part in the 2004 documentary DIG!, which chronicles the love-hate relationship and divergent career paths between the frontmen of the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre.
