Aryna Sabalenka emphasized that her mindset has changed during her successful start to the season. She is calmer and willing to wait for opportunities instead of recklessly going for big shots. In her first Grand Slam singles final, facing the Wimbledon champion and down a set, her guts were tested.
Under intense pressure in the crucial final game, Sabalenka stayed strong. She concentrated on seeking solutions and after an electrifying match featuring fearless, unrelenting shots from both players, Sabalenka emerged victorious 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Rybakina, winning the Australian Open.
Sabalenka, from Belarus, is the first athlete without a flag to win a singles Grand Slam since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. When asked if the absence of a flag detracts from her victory, Sabalenka responded that everyone still knows she’s a Belarusian player and that's all that matters.
Sabalenka, seeded 5th, will regain her No. 2 ranking after winning her first major championship. She is yet to be defeated in 2023 with 11 victories and two titles under her belt.
