The United States has issued a new warning for green card holders. The government said anyone who supports terrorism or promotes violence could lose their legal right to stay in the country. Officials have introduced a new immigration policy aimed at enforcing strict rules on lawful permanent residents.

New Policy

On Wednesday, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) used its official social media account to issue a warning. The agency stated that people holding green cards or visas could have them revoked if they promote terrorism or violence. USCIS reminded the public that living in the United States as a legal immigrant is a privilege.

USCIS said that promoting violence or supporting terrorism goes against US laws and values. In such cases, green card holders will not be allowed to stay in the country. “Green cards and visas will be revoked if an alien breaks the law,” the agency posted.

Green Card

A green card allows foreign nationals to live and work in the United States permanently. According to the Office of Homeland Security Statistics, around 12.8 million people held green cards as of January 1, 2024.

Many people, including a large number of Indians, have relied on green cards to build lives in the United States. The new warning has caused concern among these immigrants. Some fear that the new policies will lead to deportation for minor legal violations.

Statement

USCIS posted several messages on social media to stress its position. In a post on May 7, 2025, the agency wrote that green cards are for people who help improve the United States. The agency said that individuals who try to harm the country from within do not deserve to stay.

The department also posted on May 5, 2025, that the government continues to check the background of green card holders even after approval. They said anyone who breaks the law can lose their legal status at any time.

Continuous Screening and New Deportation Measures
Officials from USCIS and the Department of Homeland Security said they are now using continuous screening for all permanent residents. The agencies said this step is needed to protect the country.

The “Catch-And-Revoke” policy is now in effect. This means that green card holders caught breaking the law may lose their status without delay. Under previous rules, residents had a chance to challenge or fix minor violations. The new rule could make it more difficult to appeal a decision.

Tougher Immigration Laws

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the new policy is part of efforts to prevent misuse of the country’s immigration system. He said the government would act quickly against non-citizens who violate laws.

Rubio stated that the time for leniency has ended. Legal immigrants who break laws should no longer expect to remain in the country.

New Rules Could Drive Away Skilled Workers

Not everyone agrees with the new immigration approach. David Bier from the Cato Institute said the policy could push away talented people. He said immigrants with skills may choose to live in other countries if they fear harsh consequences for small offenses.

Bier used social media to share his views. He said the rule could hurt the country by reducing its appeal to skilled immigrants.
