Atlantic Shark Institute's research team witnesses Megalodon shark-like creature on sea scan. Find out the truth

The research team at the Atlantic Shark Institute was taken off guard when they spotted an enormous shark-shaped blob on the underwater scanner off the New England coast. The sonar image resembled a 50-feet long megalodon shark weighing 40 tonnes but it was later confirmed that it was just a school of mackerel fish.

The Megalodons were a species of shark that vanished from the face of the earth some 3 million years ago. They were considered one of the largest carnivores of all time with 50 feet in length and 7 inches long teeth.

The researchers reported seeing an enormous red-shaped blob appear on their fish finder. They tracked the image for some time and it appeared as if it was heading toward their boat. The image shared on social media shows a head-to-tail view. A distinct dorsal fin is also visible in the said image.


After a few minutes, the huge red image scattered into thousands of smaller fish called the Atlantic Mackerel. The Mackerel are known for hunting in packs on a lookout for plankton and other food. The shark-shaped image that startled the scientists was a tightly packed school of mackerels perhaps out on a food hunt.

The researchers took to Instagram to post the image and shared their disappointment. The post said that on their recent trip they were amused to see a shape appear on their underwater scanner for several minutes. Based on the length of the image they estimated it to be the 'Meg' which was 50-feet-long and weighed 40 tonnes.

The scientists said that the large school of Atlantic mackerel hung around their boat for about 15 minutes. They expressed their disappointment in losing the Otodus Megalodon, which disappeared more than 3 million years ago. They were excited to believe for a few minutes that the mega creature has returned.
