An open shooting in Atlanta killed one person and injured five others on Saturday night. The incident occurred after a dispute escalated to gunfire near a retail store on the 17th Street bridge in the Atlantic Station district.

Per media reports, the shooting took place around 8 pm.

The Associated Press reported that a group of juveniles was escorted off the property by security and off-duty police officers. Atlanta Police homicide commander Lt. Germaine Dearlove said that one male, aged between 15-21, was killed while several others were transported to the hospital after the shooting.

In its official statement to the press, Atlantic Station said an altercation happened within a group, after which gunshots were fired. The developer stated that community safety was its top priority and that it was working with law enforcement for the investigation. The Atlantic Station website states that people under 21 years are not allowed on the property premises after 9 pm, while those under 18 years need to accompany their parents or guardians after 3 pm ET.

According to an AFP report, sadness, anger and fear were coursing on March 17 through Stephanie Cho, a day after a gunman's attack on spas in the Atlanta area killed eight people -- most of whom were Asian women. Police have said suspect Robert Aaron Long, a 21-year-old white man, has so far denied a racist motive for the three shootings in the southern US state of Georgia. But Cho, the executive director of advocacy group Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta, fiercely disagreed.

Police said suspect Long told them he had a sex addiction and wanted to "eliminate" a "temptation", but denied that the attacks were racist. The violence comes at a time of extreme tension for the Asian American community. The number of attacks and hate crimes against Asian Americans has exploded since the beginning of the pandemic, according to anti-extremism groups.
