Atlanta Falcons sign two-year contract with cornerback Mike Ford: Report

The Atlanta Falcons are bringing back cornerback and special teams ace Mike Ford, who spent the past two seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

The Falcons have agreed to a deal with Ford, offering him a two-year contract worth $4 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Mike Ford returns to Atlantic Falcons for second time

Ford is coming back to play for the Atlanta Falcons after having previously played for the team. With his return, he will be working with Marquice Williams, the special teams coordinator for the Falcons.


Ford played for the Falcons in 2022, appearing in 17 games but starting in only two of them. In those two games, he made 15 tackles, one of which was a tackle for a loss, and he also recorded one quarterback hit.

During the 2022 season, the Falcons' starting cornerbacks were Darren Hall, Isaiah Oliver, and A.J. Terrell (who is still on the team). Ford was also a key player for the Falcons' special teams, playing the most snaps in that unit - 361 in total. This indicates that Ford spent the most time on the field during special teams plays compared to other players.

During the 2022 season, Williams mentioned that he used Ford as an example to teach others, even before Ford officially joined the Atlanta Falcons.

Williams said he views Ford as an impact player who brings great energy and awareness to the team. He believes Ford is positive, a leader who leads by example, and has been a valuable addition to the special teams unit.

Williams stated that Ford leads by example, consistently playing with great effort. He emphasizes that in their team, they discuss how "great plays are made from great effort," and Ford demonstrates this week after week.

Ford later joined the Cleveland Browns, where he played for the past two seasons.

Mike Ford's career

Ford, 29, appeared in all 17 games for the Falcons during the 2022 season, which was his only year in Atlanta. He started two games at cornerback but only played seven percent of the defensive snaps. However, he played a significant role on special teams, participating in 83 percent of the team's snaps and totalling 15 tackles.

Primarily known as a special-teams player, Ford has played in 94 NFL games, including 10 starts. After going undrafted from Southeast Missouri State in 2018, Ford has also played for the Detroit Lions and Denver Broncos.
